Komphela dashes Sundowns surge in title race

Mamelodi Sundowns' dominant display in recent matches has not convinced Kaizer Chiefs coach, Steve Komphela of the Brazilians’ chance of winning the league title.

Chiefs moved into fourth position on the Absa Premiership log after playing to a 1-1 draw with Ajax Cape Town at Athlone Stadium. Amakhosi are one point off the log leaders SuperSport United indicating the Glamour Boys intention to stay in the title race.

“It’s all about pressure, we’ve got to win our own matches and put pressure on them,” Komphela said.

Sundowns closed the gap between themselves and Matsatsantsa when they beat fellow title contenders Bidvest Wits on Saturday, with Pitso Mosimane close in on the current front runners and the aching reminder that games in hand don’t equal to points, Komphela says the current CAF Champions League holders still have to fight to get the points from their catch-up games.

“They need to win all their remaining games in hand, whether it is possible, yes it is possible. Can they do it? Yes they can, but they still have to do it.

“So we just have to be in a position where we win our own matches, and put pressure on them. They’re always going to have suspensions that is a dynamic in football. Some players will lose form, that’s another dynamic, they are not machines. Then unfortunately a few of their players will pick up injuries, this happens in football.

“Now based on all these things, are they lucky enough to survive all those things? If they are then that (winning the league) will happen but if they face those disruptions….then we will cross that bridge when we get there,” Komphela concluded.
