Let’s turn the league title race into a cup final

The back and forth by the Premier Soccer League, South African Football Association (Safa) and the Ministry of Sport, Arts & Culture on whether the local league should resume or not is tiring.

Each week the heads of these bodies go on record in an interview about a meeting they were in to try and find a way to play the remaining games so we can crown the league champions, giving false hope to everyone hoping for the 2019/2020 season to rescue them from watching old Cup games courtesy of SuperSport TV.

There can only be one winner at the end of the day, no one remembers number two. And a few teams in the league have a mathematical chance of winning the league, while Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns have a clear shot at the title.

Amakhosi and the Brazilians have a steady record in the league this season of not losing two matches in a row, meaning teams with an outside chance will need Chiefs and Sundowns to lose a handfull of matches in the remaining games for them to catch up.

With only two teams having a realistic chance to win the league, the PSL and Safa should consider staging a winner-takes-all game between Chiefs and Sundowns – one game at the FNB stadium without spectators, and everyone watching safely from home on the television.

Stage one lockdown is nowhere in sight, with President Cyril Ramaphosa stating sporting activities will be put off until further notice. There should be one match that decides everyone’s fate, so clubs can prepare for next season with some players’ contracts set to expire at the end of June.
