Davids disappointed with lack of goals ahead of Confed Cup return leg

The Buccaneers have scored just once in their last four outings across all competitions.

Things don’t seem to be going well at Orlando Pirates, with the side finding themselves nine points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns after seven rounds of matches played in the DStv Premiership league.

Lying on sixth place with 10 points, the Buccaneers have recorded four draws, two wins and one loss, and have scored just one goal in their last three league outings.

It might still be early in the season, but dropping points like this will likely see the Soweto giants out of the championship race at some point.

In their recent goalless draw with Maritzburg United on Wednesday, they only have themselves to blame for missing plenty of goal scoring opportunities against a 10-men Team of Choice outfit.

Co-coach Fadlu Davids was noticeably dissatisfied with the outcome of the match and felt that his side dropped points unnecessarily.

“It’s more of two points lost than one point gained. Really disappointing result, not being able to unlock the team Maritzburg. Yes, we can give them credit on the one hand for defending well. But, of course it’s on us to be able to unlock their defense. We weren’t able to score especially in the first half where we really created a lot of opportunities,” said the Buccaneers coach.

“You score the first goal and the game changes, but we weren’t able to do that. We tried different ways, going wide, going inside to unlock them, but we weren’t able to score today.”

Davids and his co-coach Mandla Ncikazi will be hoping for a firing performance in front of goals as they now switch their attention to the Caf Confederation Cup second round preliminary stages return leg against Congolese side Diables Noirs at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday. The two sides played to a goalless draw in Brazzaville a week ago.
