Football legends help to raise 80k on Mandela Day

Football legends came together in support to raise R80 000 for the South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled (SASAPD) courtesy of Sports betting company Betway South Africa as part of the company’s Nelson Mandela Day celebrations on Thursday.


In celebrating the day and giving back, the betting company held a 67-minute football match with a commitment to donate R1,000 to the SASAPD for every goal scored.

Former Orlando Pirates duo Edward Motale and Steve Lekoelea were amongst some of the players who took part in the games, as well as former Banyana Banyana players Khabo Zitha and Sibongile Khumalo to mention a few.

Motale says he was happy to take part in the initiative and says the donation will help the SASAPD.

“It’s really good to give back and I’m happy that I was part of the people who came and played the matches. I’m sure this donation will help the SASAPD,” said the Bucs legend.

President of SASAPD Moekie Grobbelaar who is a former powerlifting gold medallist at the IPC Powerlifting World Championships and Paralympic bronze medallist explained that the money raised would go a long way in the development of athletes with special needs.

“On behalf of the South African Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, we would like to thank Betway for their very kind donation that we are receiving today (Thursday). This donation will make an immediate difference to the athletes. The funds will be used to purchase Boccia and Goalball equipment that will assist grow these sporting codes in South Africa” said Grobbelaar.
