‘It’s the same as Erwin Saavedra who also struggled to make an impact,’ a source told Mgosi Squad.

Mamelodi Sundowns are exploring another loan deal for Argentine midfielder Matías Esquivel, who has struggled to make an impact since joining the club in January 2024 from Club Atlético Lanús.
Esquivel was loaned out to Talleres de Córdoba at the start of the current season in a bid to regain form, but he returned to Sundowns three months ago.

Despite his return, the midfielder has found game time hard to come by, making just one appearance in the Betway Premiership. It was a brief cameo off the bench in a 3-0 win over SuperSport United in February.
Before his short stint back in Argentina, Esquivel managed only nine league appearances for Sundowns, scoring a single goal.
The club had high hopes for the creative midfielder, but he has yet to live up to expectations. According to a source close to the club, Sundowns are thinking of cutting ties with the 26-year-old, with a possible transfer or another loan spell on the table.
“The move to Sundowns hasn’t worked out as the club would have hoped. It’s the same as Erwin Saavedra who also struggled to make an impact,” a source told Mgosi Squad.

“The club is trying to move him on and if that doesn’t work, a loan move is also being explored to try and help him get back to the level he was at before coming from South America.”
