Pirates react to playing Sundowns on Monday

Orlando Pirates administrative officer Floyd Mbele says they would have liked to play Mamelodi Sundowns on another day, not on Monday.

Mbele, however, says the club understands the challenge that the Premier Soccer League (PSL) is faced with have to balance the league and Caf Champions League fixtures to accommodate Sundowns.

“Ordinarily I would say we are not happy with playing this match on a Monday night, especially if you consider our fans and the revenue we generate. But I think this situation is understandable,” Mbele told SAFM.

“It is difficult for the club from a revenue generating view point, because generally high profiled games such as this, with the league standing that the two clubs have it will be an almost sold out event so you do have to mitigate that and say look given what the league has to deal with, what clubs have to deal with the situation is understandable.”

Meanwhile, as reported earlier, five of Sundowns’ league games were rescheduled so they could honour their Caf fixtures in April.

The Brazilians are set to face Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the quarterfinals of the Caf Champions League.
