Polokwane City: A draw against Sundowns is like three points

Polokwane City became the latest team to derail Mamelodi Sundowns’ defence of their Absa Premiership title on Tuesday evening after holding Pitso Mosimane’s men to a goalless draw.

City’s team manager Bernard Molekwa – who has been tasked with guiding the side until the end of the season following Luc Eymael’s departure – says a point away from home to African champions is like maximum points for his side, who are in contention for a top-eight finish.

“When we went to Sundowns, we went with our point, and we fought for two points, but unfortunately those two points did not come, but we are happy with our point that we came with, we are happy to go back with it. It is like three points for us because those are the African champions, no one gave us a chance. I motivated the boys and prepared them for this game and told them that in the field of play it is 11 against 11. The names are there, but names are not playing the game, it is the players who are playing,” said Molekwa.

City have now gone eight games without a win, and in those eight, six have been consecutive draws. Golden Arrows, Platinum Stars and Chippa United are hot on their heels for a top-eight finish. Molekwa’s side will have the opportunity to create some distance as they go up against those three sides in back-to-back clashes, but not before they host Bloemfontein Celtic, who are now mentored by their former coach, Eymael.

“We have to be one, we need to make sure that we work together and pull in the same direction. Nothing is impossible as long as we are in this thing together. Also, the support that we are getting from the management, we believe that we build our confidence from this point that we have taken tonight,” emphasised Molekwa.
