Sono admits to developing players for financial gain

Jomo Cosmos boss Jomo Sono has admitted that he runs the club with the money he makes from selling players he develops.

Sono was responding to former Cosmos striker Christopher Katongo’s comment that Cosmos would be in the Absa Premiership if he did not kept on selling quality players.

Katongo told reporters at the launch of the Castle 5s that his former coach’s salesman approach to running the club was the reason Cosmos were relegated four times from the top tier.

“I am not going to take money from my house and run football. Football must run itself. I can’t take money from my family [and put it to the club]… so that my family badle amagundwane kusasa (eat rats in future)? Never,” Sono was quoted as saying by SowetanLIVE .

Sono has challenged his critics to try to run a club, stating that all the money made from the sale of players goes back to the club.

“I respect people’s opinions. But whoever has an opinion must come in and feel the pressure I am feeling here. I do not sell players and then I go buy a Mercedes Benz or a Porsche. I take that money to run the club because I have to pay salaries.”
