Union accuses Cosmos of not paying players their salaries

National First Division side Jomo Cosmos is accused of failing to pay players on time.


Deputy General Secretary of the South African Football Players Union (Safpu) Nhlanhla Shabalala says Cosmos owes its playing personnel money.

“Cosmos doesn’t pay its players on time. Last month a number of their players didn’t receive their salaries, and this month as well some players were not paid.

“Jomo Sono says one of his accounts has a problem as he is expecting money from overseas. This is a problem as players are given instructions on how to behave and what to eat away from the club to help with conditioning their bodies by clubs that can’t pay players,” Tshabalala told Isolezwe.

A player who is part of the Cosmos team who spoke to Isolezwe on condition of anonymity said some players have gone without a salary for two months.

“I got paid on Tuesday, but some players have not been paid. Bra J (Jomo Sono) told us that he has problems with SARS. He would tell us every day that we will get paid the next day. We usually get paid on the last day of each month,” said the player.
