Wits slide continues in AmaZulu loss

Bidvest Wits are still in the race for the Absa Premiership title, but if current form is any indicator they are heading very much in the wrong direction.

The Clever Boys’ 2-0 loss to AmaZulu at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday night deprived them of a chance to go back to the top of the table, with Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City all not in league action at the weekend.

Wits have won just one of their last seven league games, and will have to spend their next two Premiership matches without captain Thulani Hlatshwayo, after his red card against AmaZulu.

Wits’ away form had been keeping them on top of the table, as they have been mediocre at home all campaign, but were without a defeat on the road in the league until they were beaten at Highlands Park on February 9.

Now, however, they have suffered two league defeats in a row away from Bidvest Stadium, and with their home form not improving, they look unlikely to keep pace with Sundowns, Pirates and even City for the rest of the season.

AmaZulu, meanwhile, do tend to raise their game against sides they are not expected to beat, and added Wits to Sundowns and Cape Town City as sides they have beaten in 2019.

Second-half goals from Bongi Ntuli, his sixth league goal of the season, and Ovidy Karuru, were enough to see Usuthu home.

“It’s a big result against a top team who are fighting for the league.

“The boys kept working hard and we will keep fighting until the end,” Cavin Johnson told SABC TV after the match.
