Maritzburg advance to TKO semifinals

Maritzburg United edged Highlands Park 4-3 on penalties to reach the 2019 Telkom Knockout semifinals at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening.

The game had to be decided on penalties after the teams were locked at 1-1 after extra-time.

Gabriel Nyoni scored the decisive spot-kick for the Team of Choice.

Highlands were the better team in the opening exchanges of the clash and should’ve opened the scoring after nine minutes after Mokete Mogaila picked out Wayde Joose inside the area, but he failed to find the target with the goal at his mercy.

It didn’t take long though for the Lions of the North to take the lead as Jerry Msane fired the visitors in front five minutes later with a header, capitalising on Bongani Mpandle’s mistake in goals.

Highlands took their slender lead to the half-time break.

The Team of Choice improved after the break and levelled matters in the 51st minute as Mlungisi Mbunjana nodded Yusuf Jappie’s corner kick into the back of his own net.

Extra-time failed to produce a winner and the game had to be decided on penalties.
