Tributes pour in for Cedric ‘Sugar Ray’ Xulu following his death at 81

The soccer legend died after a battle with cancer.


After AmaZulu Football Club confirmed the death of South African soccer legend Cedric “Sugar Ray” Xulu on Monday, numerous tributes poured in for him.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Sugar Ray Xulu, an AmaZulu legend. Our condolences go out to all his friends and family during this tragic time,” the club announced on Twitter.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial government also paid tribute to Xulu.

“He put the province and country on the map despite the constraints of the time. This is a generation that succeeded when odds were stacked against them and left a permanent footprint in our landscape,” said KZN premier Sihle Zikalala in a statement.

Xulu was 81 years old when he died in Pinetown following a battle with cancer.

The soccer legend had the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont named after him.

In his career, Xulu also played for Mbabane Swallows in Swaziland.
