In the good old days, (and I might be called discriminative when I say this), when we reported streetlights out, even if it was a Sunday, the council emergency electrician came out, on that day, and did his work.
Now we are paying more, for less, and we are not going backwards, as some seem to say, but we are going forwards at quite a speed, into a time when nothing will be done to repair streetlights, potholes, swimming pools, tennis courts, and so on.
I think that council would like us to be the same as the rest of the continent, where all this is commonplace.
When one thinks about it, we are there already.
I have reported several lights not working in my street, and potholes, but all I get are false promises.
I often wonder if the person to whom we speak ever gets just the slightest feeling of guilt when they know that they are telling lies?
I would love to be a municipal manager in our town, then there would be plenty of people out of work.
Peter Denton,
Struisbult.
