Eskom warns of ‘noise’ and ‘emissions’ at Lethabo
Residents are warned of 'noise' and increased emissions as a unit at the Lethabo Power Station near Vereeniging is brought back to service.

VEREENIGING – Eskom’s Lethabo Power Station has issued an advisory regarding commissioning activities scheduled for Wednesday, February 7, as it prepares to return Unit 3 to service following an interim outage.
The power utility cautioned that the process might coincide with loud noise and increased emissions as the unit is brought back online. According to Eskom, Unit 3 was taken offline to undergo essential upgrades, specifically targeting long-term emission reductions.
“The ESP component and SO₃ upgrades were done specifically to reduce emissions in the long term,” Eskom said in a statement.
Once Unit 3 is synchronized on February 7, a series of tests will be conducted in the following days to ensure its safe return to full operation. During this period, increased noise and emissions are expected.
“There will be emissions and noise levels from Unit 3 during the commissioning activities for an extended period,” Eskom warned.
The power station emphasized its commitment to environmental compliance, assuring that once the synchronization process is complete, emissions will be kept within the required license limits.
“Lethabo remains committed to minimizing the emissions and continues to operate within the confined legislative requirements,” Eskom stated.
Residents near the power station have been advised to anticipate temporary disruptions as Lethabo ensures Unit 3’s efficient and safe reintegration into the grid.
