Rising inflows force staggered gate release at Vaal Dam

A sudden surge in inflows has prompted officials to activate a staggered five-gate release at the Vaal Dam today, with downstream communities urged to take immediate precautions.

DENEYSVILLE – A new advisory issued this morning confirms the planned staggered opening of five sluice gates at the Vaal Dam, following heavy inflows from the Grootdraai Dam and widespread rainfall in the catchment.

According to officials, all valves will be closed before the gates are opened on the following schedule:

  • Gate 1: 09:00
  • Gate 2: 10:00
  • Gate 3: 11:00
  • Gate 4: 12:00
  • Gate 5: 13:00

This supports the earlier communication noting that inflows into the Vaal Dam rose sharply to 962.2 m³/s this morning (up from 187 m³/s on Sunday), pushing the dam level from 104.07% to 107.43% in just 24 hours.

Authorities have again urged residents and farmers downstream of the Vaal Dam to move pumps, livestock, and equipment away from low-lying areas and to take all necessary precautions.
