Power outage: this is the reason!

Councilor Phillip Nothnagel of Ward 5 just released this statement concerning the current power outage experienced in certain suburbs in Vanderbijlpark:

I have just spoken to a senior person at the ELM Electrical Department. Technicians from ELM cannot get access to the stores at the Vereeniging workshops to draw spares needed for repairs. This is due to the fact that the residents from Mhuvango have barricated the premises. They are protesting due the fact that they have had no electricity for months.

Apparently the SAPS are on the scene to try and defuse the situation. According to the person I spoke to they have no idea when this standoff will end. I am therefor unable to inform the affected residents when the power will be restored. I do not condone violent protests in any form. However I do think the blame for this chaotic situation should be laid squarely at the door of the municipality, who has allowed the electrical distribution system to collapse. The years of lack of maintenance has now taken its toll.

Drastic intervention is needed to restore service delivery at ELM. This municipality has failed and should be put under full administration.
