Comrades champ recovering at home

Comrades Marathon champion Nick Bester is recovering in his Pretoria home following a brutal attack that left him with multiple broken bones last month.

“He was discharged on Thursday [3 September],” Bester’s son Shaun told Pretoria Rekord on Monday morning.

“He’s much better, but he’s still very sore. Plus he’s struggling to walk somewhat.”

Shaun said his father’s heels were recovering from the skin that had been peeled off during the attack.

Bester was ambushed from behind by a group of three men while hiking along the Magalies Mountain near Amandasig in the north of Pretoria.

The 1991 Comrades marathon champion was struck with a rock.

He suffered three broken ribs as well as a broken cheekbone, along with multiple cuts on his body and a gash on his head.

“It’s going to take six to eight weeks for him to recover,” his son said.

Last week, specialist serious violent and economic crime investigator Mike Bolhuis said there was a R50 000 reward offered for information that could lead to the successful prosecution of the three assailants.

Elaborating about the progress with the pursuit of the perpetrators, Shaun said they had received some information but nothing “solid” thus far.

“If it’s not information that leads to a direct arrest, then the reward is invalid,” he said.

Akasia police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli previously confirmed an armed robbery docket was opened for investigation.

“He was robbed of his bank cards, an undisclosed amount of money and his personal licensed firearm,” she said.
