Residents want ELM to provide permanent solution after houses get flooded

SEBOKENG. – About eight houses were flooded over the weekend following heavy rains in Zone 7 extension.

Residents say their attempts to get representatives from the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) to assist them have failed. “This happens every time there are heavy rains in the area. Furniture gets destroyed and there is really nothing we can do about it.”

Residents blame ELM for an incomplete project which has now allegedly resulted in water being stuck in their yards every time it rains.

Ward 42 Councillor Neliswa Jama says that this is a problem that occurs every year during the rainy season. Jama says  on Saturday, an elderly Gogo was stuck inside her house  and couldn’t go out after her whole yard got flooded.

“When we called the municipality, the fire department responded but unfortunately there was nothing they could do to assist.  This year some of the rooms in  Gogo’s house were also flooded.”

Jama says  it is a  struggle for ward Councillors  to get the assistance they need from ELM. Vaalweekblad has inquired with ELM.
