The tragedy struck in Hamilton Road, Evaton in the early hours of the morning when the owner of the shack, Tankisi Nqobo, and his friend were asleep.
Nqobo and his friend lost all their possessions in the fire, including their clothes and Identity Documents (ID).
Speaking to Vaalweekblad, the stand owner, Mamokete Mokoena said the cause of the fire is unknown. However, she suspects that it could be a faulty electrical connection. The two friends had to break the corrugated iron of the shack to escape the fire as the door failed to open.
“We were awoken by a noise outside and saw flames coming from the shack but there was nothing we could do. Any attempt to fight the strong fire was unsuccessful, even when the fire fighters arrived. The two guys are left with nothing and we are appealing to good Samaritans to help them. They are such good people who have been staying here for sometimes now,” said Mokoena.
* Good Samaritans who are interested to help can visit the two at Hamilton Road, Stand No 830 next to Muthi House in Evaton Central or contact Vaalweekblad.
