Vanderbijlpark shootings: “I will never forget what I saw” – Car guard
VANDERBIJLPARK. - A 31 - year- old car guard, Siyabonga Mvo has told the story of how he narrowly escaped death.
This is after 49-year-old Tommy Phalatsi went on a shooting spree in Vanderbijlpark before ending his life.
Mvo states that everything happened very quickly.
“The driver of a speeding BMW X5 hit a stationary Isuzu double cab which capsized, partially landing on the restaurant manager.”
Mvo adds that the driver then got out of his vehicle wielding a gun. He first shot the manager on the leg. He started shooting randomly outside the restaurant. Mvo said that patrons ran for cover, but unfortunately the man shot at two males.
A father and his 18-year-old son who were going to get takeaways at the restaurant. Mvo states that the man then got into his vehicle and drove off. The incident took place around 19:00.
” I was hiding about three meters away from the scene. I said a little prayer from where I was hiding.”
Immediately after the commotion, Mvo says he ran for his dear life to the Vanderbijlpark SAPS Community Service Centre(CSC).
“My paranoia got the best of me. It felt like the gunman was coming after me. I did not even sanitise on my arrival at the CSC. Police officers stopped me as I was about to jump over the desks.
“I tried to remain calm and explain what had transpired to the police, but words failed me.”
Mvo says police asked him to take them to the scene but at first, he refused.
“After calming down, I agreed. On our arrival, I saw three people lying on the ground, scattered. The paramedics, police and neighborhood watch arrived at the scene.”
The restaurant employees were crying non stop. I will never forget what I saw. We have all been left with a lot of trauma.” Mvo concludes.
