Illegal dumping is NOT acceptable
VANDERBIJLPARK. - Residents have reached boiling point when it comes to illegal dumping. While some local companies are going the extra mile to try and make the town and surrounding areas better for the whole community, there are others who are doing just the opposite.
A resident captured a local company in the act of dumping waste next to the road. She says she has tried to communicate with the owner repeatedly. “When I called the owner to lodge a complaint he claimed he has a permit to dump in this area as it is a legal dumping area. He now refuses to speak to me and has blocked my number,” says Antionette Volschenk. She took photos of what she still believes is illegal dumping on 16 February 2021 at about 16:00 on Nelson Mandela Blvd in Vanderbijlpark next to the Bopolong informal settlement.
“There is already a problem with people illegally dumping next to the road due to the lack of municipal services to these areas. We drive this road daily and the heaps just gets bigger and bigger”.
“What is also becoming a hazard is the fact that these “created dumping sites” attracts people who digs through these dumps daily in search for plastic or cardboard and start making a living there. Some days the road is engulfed with smoke and flames from people setting the garbage alight,” says Antionette.
“I find it disgusting that you add to the filth that’s already building up in our streets. Instead use your trucks to clear the illegal dumps and add value to the community”, says Antionette.
