The sewerage network in Chopin Street is overflowing again!

The next episode of local residents' stinking problem

Vaalweekblad last week reported about the sewer leak near the Checkers Centre in Frikkie Meyer Boulevard (continuing into Chopin Street): Emfuleni Municipality and local business attended to the problem but since yesterday raw sewage is spilling out again. Residents are totally despondent because they can’t properly breath. The stench is overwhelming. (UPDATE: Residents have just informed Vaalweekblad that the problem is rapidly escalating – raw sewage is now pouring into some shops in the area. We trust Emfuleni will act quick!)

DA Councillor Phillip Nothnagel of Emfuleni’s Ward 5 wrote this letter to Emfuleni’s Municipal Manager and Administrator this morning:

To the MM and Adminstrator:

The sewer leak in Chopin Street SW5 that I reported last night and numerous times earlier last week, has still not been stopped. This despite the fact that you personally escalated the matter. This is a very serious health risk!

It seems as if Metsi and other officials are simply ignoring instructions even from you. Their irresponsible and don’t care attitude are fast destroying what little is left of our town.

Unless Top Management is prepared to implement consequence management to it’s full extend ELM will not be saved.

This must stop now.

This is my personal opinion.

Phillip Nothnagel

Raw sewage is again leaking out in the gardens and yards of residents living in Chopin Street, Vanderbijlpark.
