Illegal squatters vow not to move out

There's an estimation of 500 illegal shacks in Lethabong.

SEBOKENG. – The informal residents of Lethabong squatter camp in Waterdale near Zone 10 in Sebokeng, have vowed that they are not to going anywhere.

The residents were supposed to be out soon to make space for the building of the RDP and low cost houses.

Jonas Masike one of the community leaders told Vaalweekblad that their meeting with Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) MMC for Housing, Edwin Kele on Friday 18 June failed to bear fruit.

Masike said Kele  just wasted his time with promises to talk to the residents. “We are not going to buy his statement,” said Masike.

Kele said that the residents were occupying the land illegally and that the owner has approached the court to get an eviction order against them . “We dont want to see residents being evicted hence we appeal to them to allow the process to take place. I tried to engaged with them aiming to show the risk of that land. I told them that they must get ready to move out,” said Kele.

He promised that the municipality will in the meantime try to look for an alternative land. Kele said there’s an estimation of 500 illegal shacks in Lethabong.
