Maccauvlei Golf Club’s well-known stars

Vereeniging's Bobby Locke and Charl Schwartzel - both big names in international golfing circles

Maccauvlei Golf Club is one of the brightest jewels in the Vaal Triangle’s sporting crown, enjoyed by thousands of golfers since 1926.
Bobby Locke, generally regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time, was a prolific international tournament winner and had a close connection with Maccauvlei Country Club. Aged only 18, Locke won the South African Open for the first of nine times in 1935 at the Parkview Golf Club in Johannesburg, playing as an amateur. He played in his first Open Championship in 1936. He turned professional in March 1938 at the age of 21 and was engaged by Maccauvlei as club professional in December 1939. His golfing career was interrupted by service in the South African Air Force during World War II. Following the end of the war he successfully resumed his career and won many of the world’s best known tournaments. Locke passed away on 9 March 1987 in Johannesburg.

Charl Schwartzel
‘This is where it all started for me’. This is scribbled and signed on a huge ‘Masters’ picture collage proudly displayed in Maccauvlei’s clubhouse, showing Masters champion Charl Schwartzel’s spectacular feat in 2011. Charl grew up on a farm near Maccauvlei. His father George, a former Maccauvlei Club Captain, introduced Charl to the game of golf as a young boy. Charl has been Maccauvlei’s men’s Club Champion three times (1999-2002), his younger brother Attie, eight times (2003-07 and 2019-21), and their dad George, once in 1995.
On reading through Charl’s golfing achievements through his early years, one realises that he was destined to become a very remarkable golfer. He won many accolades while rising through the junior ranks at Maccauvlei and eventually became known as one of the world’s spectacular golf stars.
