Mediclinic Vereeniging hits a milestone of 200 Endoscopic Spine Procedures
Dr Dennis Agbazue, an Orthopaedic Surgeon, together with the theatre team at Mediclinic Vereeniging, performed their 200th procedure of this kind at the hospital this morning, March 25.

VEREENIGING. – This morning, March 25 at 07:30, Dr Dennis Agbazue, an Orthopaedic Surgeon with an interest in Interventional Pain Management, together with the theatre team at Mediclinic Vereeniging, achieved the milestone of their 200th successful endoscopic spinal procedure.
Dr Agbazue led the first endoscopic spinal procedure with the Mediclinic team on National Women’s Day, August 9, 2022, with five scheduled patients, and performed his 100th procedure on July 31, 2023. Even though he closed his practice during the December 2023 holiday season, he still managed to carry out 200 endoscopic spinal procedures by today, March 25, 2024.
Endoscopic Spinal Procedure, also known as Transforaminal endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TELD), is a minimally invasive technique that addresses back pain. With the collaboration of Q Surgical, the pioneers of Endoscopic Spinal Surgery in South Africa, Dr Agbazue has enhanced the quality of patients’ lives using their most advanced cutting-edge instrumentation and technology.
The procedure has proven to be a more effective clinical technique when compared to the standard open spine procedure, which can interrupt the human physiology and cause a prolonged hospital stay. With this procedure, a surgeon can carefully determine the trajectory of the scope in the spinal canal to relieve the pressure that causes pain, thus enabling the patient to go home the same day or the next.
As testament to the advantages of the procedure, the doctor has shared that some of his patients request his approval to resume normal daily activities within the first few weeks post the procedure. Dr Agbazue not only treats patients from the Vaal, but also has patients who travel all the way from Johannesburg and Pretoria.
“Mediclinic Vereeniging remains the preferred facility to conduct the endoscopic spinal procedure as their theatre has a workforce of highly trained personnel, and aspects such as Patient Safety and Patient Experience are always prioritised,” said Dr Agbazue.
