Meyerton man gets 12 years imprisonment for murdering girlfriend

Another convicted murderer has been sentenced to imprisonment thanks to the diligent investigation and collection of evidence by the investigating officer.

MEYERTON. – A 30-year-old man who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend in 2021 was handed down a prison sentence of 12 years imprisonment in the Vereeniging Regional Court recently.

Sello William Mokoena (30) brutally stabbed his girlfriend Mpenyana Joyce Weight on 22 December 2021.

According to police spokesperson Const. Tlaleng Moloi, the police in Meyerton received inforrmation about a murder at Kraal Janteen in Sicelo.

“On arrival at the murder scene, the police found the lifeless body of a female with stab wounds,” recounts Moloi.

A murder case was opened and assigned to investigating officer Detective Sergeant Innocentia Mofokeng, who through diligent investigation and collection of evidence managed to secure a successful conviction.

The decision to sentence Mokoena to 12 years imprisonment was reached after appalling evidence about the brutality of the stabbing was presented to court.

Meyerton’s acting station commander, Lt. Col. Johan de Winnaar expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the investigating officer for her excellent work.

“I trust that this sentence will bring hope to the victims of gender-based violence. Severe punishments exists for such offenders,” De Winnaar said.
