SabTown rises from Sebokeng to stardom
SabTown shared his story from love at first sight to now performing on big stages.
VANDERBIJLPARK.– From the humble streets of Sebokeng to stages lighting up across Gauteng.
Sabata Nketsi, affectionately known as SabTown, is fast becoming one of the region’s most promising Afro Pop sensations.
At 32, the soft-spoken yet passionate artist has poured over two decades of dedication into his musical ride.
According to SabTown, his journey started at just 12 years old in a house where music wasn’t just a hobby, but a lifestyle.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, SabTown shared his story from love at first sight to now performing on big stages.
“I fell in love with music from home. I was born in a home with a father who was a music lover, a sister who sang, and a brother who played piano. To top it off, we lived next to the legendary Papa Lulu Masilela,” he said.
SabTown was first introduced to piano by his brother, Griffith Nketsi, before being shaped by the mentorship of Lulu Masilela.
He later transformed from a church keyboardist to a sought-after performer and collaborator.
Before stepping into the limelight, SabTown was the man behind the music, playing piano for big names in the Vaal and Gauteng, including Soli Malete, Otis Ngwabi, and Bella.
In 2011, his passion for community saw him volunteer at Lefika Primary School, teaching piano and drums to Grade Six and Seven learners.
“My first major break came in 2016, when I partnered with Katleho Teme to form the group SoundCheqed. Our EP ‘Love Quest’ featured the popular single ‘Dumelang’, earned us performances at hotspots like The Orbit, Nikki’s Jazz Bar, Emerald Casino, and Vaal River Carnival,” he said.
SabTown said that his star continued to rise as he joined forces with Uhuru TV in Sharpeville.
“In 2021, I showcased my music on the live music series Jazz After Dark. My solo work includes a standout collaboration with PA (Preeminent Antics),” he added.
As SabTown prepares to drop a brand-new EP at the end of the year, he promises nothing short of magic.
“This EP is my heart. It’s the sound of the Vaal. The voice of my people. It’s live, it’s direct, and it’s going to take us places,” he said.
