Riverstone Mall Race bursts onto Vaal running calendar

It wasn’t just a race—it was a statement: the Vaal is ready for more.

MEYERTON – The inaugural Riverstone Mall Race in Meyerton hit the ground running on July 27, drawing close to 400 runners despite the chilly winter morning.

The festive atmosphere was a testament to the race’s local spirit and smooth organisation.

Conceptualised by former triathlete and renowned race organiser Glen Gore at the request of Riverstone Mall developers Alley Roads, the event aimed to draw attention to the mall while offering the Vaal running community something new.

Being a local, it just made sense,” said Gore. “We needed to promote the mall, and plotting a scenic 5km and 8 km route nearby was simple.”

The 8 km race saw Wynand de Goede storm home in 29:12, with Heinrich Kemp (30:45) and Innocent Arms (31:54) hot on his heels.

In the women’s race, Gore’s own daughter, Tegan Gore, thrilled spectators by clinching victory in 31:45.

She was born in the Vaal, so it was special bringing her back,” said Gore proudly.

The 5km race was won by Mthokozisi Mncwango (19:34) and Chandere Nel (23:13) in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.

Local stalwarts Marietjie Ceronio and Heather Kappmeier, known for decades of running excellence in the Vaal, were also spotted among the participants—adding legacy and prestige to the day.

Support came from all corners, including Midvaal Municipality and local legend Elzana Swanepoel, with DKMS South Africa raising awareness for stem cell donation.

Gore now hopes to make the race a twice-yearly fixture.

The highlight for me was the start. Seeing all those runners take off—it felt like the beginning of something great.” And great it certainly was.
