What is Boxing Day — and why do we celebrate it?

Boxing Day, celebrated the day after Christmas, is a time for rest, family, and extending the spirit of generosity that marks the festive season.

As South Africans enjoy Boxing Day — whether relaxing at home, visiting family, or hunting for post-Christmas bargains — it’s worth remembering where the day comes from.

Boxing Day originated in Britain, where employers traditionally gave “Christmas boxes” — gifts, money, or food — to their staff and tradespeople as a token of appreciation.

Churches also distributed alms to the poor, using donation boxes to extend the spirit of giving beyond Christmas Day.

Today, while the boxes themselves are largely symbolic, Boxing Day remains a day of generosity, rest, and community, offering a gentle follow-up to the excitement of Christmas celebrations.
