Water leaks worsen Arcon Park’s infrastructure woes

Thousands of litres are reportedly lost daily as ageing infrastructure and unrepaired leaks add pressure to Emfuleni’s struggling roads and water system.

VEREENIGING – Ongoing infrastructure challenges in Emfuleni are continuing to impact residents’ daily lives, with concerns now mounting over broken water meters and major water leaks in Arcon Park.

PR councillor Grace Damon has raised the alarm over what she describes as significant water losses due to leaks that have, in some cases, been reported as far back as 2024.

According to Damon, thousands of litres of water are being lost daily as a result of faulty or damaged infrastructure.

She said the issue is not only contributing to water wastage but is also causing further deterioration of roads in the area. Water flowing unchecked into streets is reportedly worsening potholes and undermining already fragile road surfaces.

“The ongoing leakages are costing the municipality in water losses and are damaging the already dilapidated streets of Arcon Park,” Damon said.

Residents have previously expressed frustration over service delivery challenges, particularly relating to ageing infrastructure and delayed maintenance. The latest concerns add to broader issues facing the Emfuleni Local Municipality, which has been grappling with infrastructure backlogs and financial constraints.

Damon has called for urgent intervention to address the reported leaks and repair or replace broken water meters. She emphasised that timely maintenance is critical to preventing further losses and protecting existing infrastructure.
