Parliament committee to probe outages in Emfuleni

A petition that was submitted to the National Council of Provinces over ongoing power disruptions has triggered a parliamentary oversight visit to assess electricity infrastructure concerns in Emfuleni.

VANDERBIJLPARK – The Select Committee on Public Petitions and Executive Undertakings will be visiting the Emfuleni Local Municipality on Saturday, 28 February 2026, to conduct an oversight visit to the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

This comes after petitioners have asked the National Council of Provinces to intervene in Eskom’s inadequate maintenance of electricity infrastructure, which has resulted in ongoing power outages affecting households and businesses in the area.

The committee will meet with residents at the Everton Fire Station at 10:00, after which it will conduct site visits in Parktown and Evaton Central.

The purpose is to assess the extent of the problem and hear directly from affected community members.

The visit forms part of Parliament’s oversight role, enabling the committee to gather first-hand information and determine whether further intervention or recommendations are required.

Emfuleni residents have in recent years raised repeated concerns about electricity reliability, with outages affecting local economic activity and service delivery.

The engagement is expected to provide affected residents with an opportunity to formally present their grievances to lawmakers.
