Homegrown talent shines at Sasol Sasolburg Marathon

Thabiso Mosekili and Anja de Bruin led local athletes to victory in a thrilling 42 km showdown at Sasolburg’s fast, flat marathon course.

SASOLBURG – Local athletes made a clean sweep at the Sasol Sasolburg Marathon on Saturday morning.

Thabiso Mosekili from Actom Athletics Club in Vanderbijlpark won the marathon (42.2 km) race in a time of 02:29:12. Mvula Vilakazi (02:32:54) and Tankiso David Radebe (02:34:18), both from Meyerton Athletics Club, finished second and third respectively.

Anja de Bruin from Vaal Athletic Club in Vereeniging was the first female athlete home in a time of 03:08:48. Gillian Farquharson (03:20:25) and Zine du Plessis (03:57:04) finished in second and third position respectively.

The 31st running of the Sasol Sasolburg Marathon, which is run on a fast and flat course, attracted approximately 3 000 national and international athletes.

Sponsored by the petrochemical giant Sasol, the race featured water stations every three kilometers to keep runners refreshed along the fast, flat course.

The water tables, known for being well-stocked, themed, and fun, are a highlight of the event.
