All-in-one sports court a first for Vaal Triangle

Suikerbos Primary has raised the bar in the Vaal Triangle with a first-of-its-kind all-in-one sports court, transforming limited space into a dynamic arena for six different codes.

VEREENIGING – There was a festive atmosphere in the air when Suikerbos Primary School launched its one-of-a-kind multi-purpose sports court last Thursday.

The innovative synthetic court can transform into a tennis court, pickleball court, soccer pitch, cricket pitch, hockey court, and netball court, and even features an existing tennis wall for practice.

The design allows all equipment – from goalposts and netball poles to movable tennis nets – to be repositioned depending on the sport being played.

Principal Carl Gordon explains the vision behind the project: “We are really the front runners [in the Vaal Triangle] with this. I started visiting other schools once or twice, sometimes three times a year, with the management team, including schools in Pretoria, to see what works. Then I noticed that no one in the Vaal Triangle had something like this. We wanted to create something that could promote sport in the area while making the most of our limited space.”

Built on the site of four former tennis courts, the new multicourt replaces the older facilities with a versatile all-in-one arena.

The existing tennis wall was retained, providing an extra space for practice. Gordon noted that traditional tennis courts last about four years before requiring costly repairs, whereas the multicourt allows multiple sports to be played on a single, durable surface.

The grand opening included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by teachers-versuslearners matches in netball and soccer, as well as a pickleball demonstration by the school’s SMT.

Afterwards, learners had the opportunity to explore the court and enjoy its many features. The only restriction is that cleats or spiky shoes are not allowed, ensuring the court remains in top condition for years to come.

“This is unique – absolutely unique,” Gordon said. “We hope it will last a long time and be a place where our children can grow, play, and enjoy sport in many different forms.”
