VANDERBIJLPARK. – Five members of the Vanderbijlpark SAPS Task Team appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Regional Court on July 7 on charges of corruption and extortion.

This follows an investigation by the Hawks’ Vaal Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) unit.

According to a statement issued by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Sergeants Johannes Thakhisi (45), Ntombeko Seya (44), Mpho Molatedi (39), Nhlanhla Sithole (42) and Tlokotsi Kganya (36) made their first court appearance on Monday, 7 July.

It is alleged that the officers demanded R100 000 in exchange for not arresting the businessman.

The case was postponed to 13 July for further investigation.

The charges stem from an incident that allegedly took place on 27 October 2024 at the Oreo Supermarket in Vanderbijlpark.

According to the Hawks, the five officers allegedly conducted a raid at the business premises under the pretext of searching for illicit cigarettes.

It is alleged that the officers then demanded R100 000 from the business owner in exchange for not arresting him. Following negotiations involving a third party, the amount was allegedly reduced to R25 000.

The complainant reportedly contacted the Hawks’ Vaal Serious Corruption Investigation unit, prompting an application for an undercover sting operation.

Although the suspects allegedly failed to collect the money due to operational delays, the investigation continued. The Hawks said further allegations of threats and intimidation against the complainant were also added to the case docket.

Following the completion of the investigation, the matter was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who authorised the criminal prosecution of the five officers.

Summonses were served on all five accused on 18 June, compelling their appearance in court.

The Hawks further indicated that SAPS disciplinary processes would also be initiated against the officers in terms of the SAPS Discipline Regulations.
