Junior tennis aces train for tourney

Young tennis players are looking forward to competing in the KZN Super 7 at Westridge Park Stadium next month.

LOCAL tennis players are gearing up for the KZN Super 7 at Westridge Park Stadium next month.

Among the players taking part this year is 11-year-old Joshua Heath, a pupil from Durban Preparatory High School. Joshua started playing tennis when he was six years old and also plays cricket, hockey, rugby and golf.

He is coached by Natalie Grandin, and hopes to be a professional sportsman one day.

Kaelan Ramduth is another young player from DPHS. He is 13 years old and is coached by John Yuill. Kaelan started playing tennis at the age of 10, and also swims and loves running long distances.

“I would like to play the best tennis that I can and achieve the highest ranking that I can. I would also like to play in ITF tournaments as I grow older,” he said.

Kaelan's sister, Kaitlyn, (10), a pupil at Maris Stella, started playing tennis at the age of five, She is also coached by John Yuill.

“My dream is to become a professional tennis player. I want to travel the world playing tennis. I want to play in the grand slams and other major tournaments,” she said.

The KZN Super 7 is held annually at Westridge Park Stadium. It is a nationally ranked junior tournament with players from all over South Africa participating. Organisers are expecting over 300 children to take part in the tournament.
