Hidden treasures await shoppers

We might be drowning in technology with e-commerce predicted to take over the shopping environment, but judging by the success of antique fairs and markets around the world, antique fairs are here to stay!

Most top cities in the world have tabletop antique and collectable fairs that attract people from all walks of life who want to enjoy strolling through markets filled with collectables and pieces that usually aren’t spotted in upmarket shopping malls and high streets.

From the world renowned Portobello Road in London and the smaller markets scattered all over the UK, to those in Paris, Vienna, Buenos Aires and New York, antique markets carry on a long tradition of old fashioned trading in what’s valuable and what’s collectable. It bears testament to the human condition of “what is one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.

The beauty of collecting lies in the fact that whether you are a serious collector or someone that has a passing interest in finding unusual items, or simply are curious to see what’s for sale, antique fairs have something for everyone.

If it is shopping with a difference you are looking for then look no further than the Nelson Mandela Square Antiques Fair which takes place this Sunday.

Once you have browsed the over 60 antique dealers who come from all over South Africa and abroad on the Upper and Lower Levels, you will be hooked.

Not only can you find the widest range of antiques and collectables – ranging from silver, glass, porcelain to books, prints, linen, accessories and jewellery – but you will also be treated to regular focus exhibitions where we put the spotlight on a particular collecting trend.
