Durban July: Sangoma picks Wylie Hall to win

It is all systems go for this year's Vodacom Durban July – even a sangoma has predicted the big-race winner.

Each year, as part of the preparations for the horse racing event, a sangoma is invited to throw the bones.

Durban sangoma Makhosonke Msomi worked his “magic” and picked Wylie Hall as the winner.

He “saw” Futura running second and French Navy third.

The main race, which carries a stake of R3.5 million, gets the attention of people throughout the country, even those who don’t usually follow horse racing.

In many SA companies, people arrange office sweeps so everyone has an interest in the July.

Msomi was confident about his predictions.

“People should put their money on the winning horse. What I have predicted is true. I see horse number 2 [Wylie Hall] winning,” he said after burning and inhaling impepho smoke.

Wylie Hall “won” the race last year, but was disqualified after the connections of Legislate objected, saying Wylie Hall had interfered with their runner.

Wylie Hall and Legislate fought out the final 300m in a neck-and-neck affair in the home straight, with Wylie Hall winning by a head on the line.

The Vodacom Durban July takes place at Greyville Racecourse on Saturday.
