Anthony Hamilton to celebrate 20-year anniversary of album at SunBet Arena

US crooner Anthony Hamilton will perform at SunBet Arena Times Square in Tshwane this weekend, but Saturday’s performance will particularly be more special as it marks exactly 20 years since he released his sophomore album Comin’ From Where I’m From.
“What better way to celebrate my 20-year album anniversary Coming From Where I’m From than with an up close and personal night in South Africa. Can’t wait to see you,” said the singer on his social media.
Comin’ from Where I’m From was released on September 23 in 2003 under So So Def Recordings and Arista Records.
After the overwhelming response to the concert set for Saturday, exactly 20 years on, Up Close & Personal announced one more night at The Sun Bet Arena with Hamilton.
The album was nominated for three Grammys, the Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song (both for the title track) and Best Contemporary R&B Album. Albeit walking away from the awards ceremony empty handed, the album is a critically acclaimed body of work.
The biggest ditty on the album, Charlene, peaked at No 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at No 5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, becoming Hamilton’s most successful single to date.
It has been streamed just below 60 million times on his Spotify. Lately, the muso has been posting videos on his social media showing other singers doing covers of songs on the album, in the lead-up to the project’s 20th anniversary.

Getting a taste of SA
Yesterday Hamilton spent the day with Kaya FM personality Tbose in an outside broadcast at the Marble Restaurant, where he was hosted by the award-winning chef Benny Masekwameng.
The dishes prepared by Chef Benny were inspired by Hamilton’s cookbook, Cornbread Fish ‘N Collard Greens: Inside The Music.
Hamilton, a father of six, is big on family unity and the importance of instilling moral values and wisdom into each generation. His book draws on his own experiences – from early childhood to manhood.
Before he was performing to sold-out arenas, the neo-soul singer/songwriter and producer was known in his hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina, as a barber.
He showed off his skills when he shaved the head of Thando ‘Thabooty’ Thabethe’s co-host Flax The DJ live on air on 947.
