Professional athlete Wayde van Niekerk and his wife, Chesney, took to Instagram on Monday with the wonderful news that they had welcomed their firstborn – a boy – into the world on the 24 November.

In the post, they merely jotted down the date to commemorate the occasion, together with their son’s names: Elijah Luca van Niekerk.

In the photos shared on his parents’ Instagram feeds, little Elijah Luca seems to be curiously looking into his parents’ eyes, while firmly grasping his daddy’s finger.

Chesney, a food sociologist and nutrition enthusiast, took to Instagram with a fun family illustration by Yay Abe to announce her pregnancy in July, saying: “I’m so excited to announce that we’re having a baby! We are looking forward to this process and to have a healthy and blessed pregnancy. Soon the Vans will be joined by a little Super Van.”

She shared the news of them expecting a boy on her birthday, with another matching illustration.

In August, the glowing mother-to-be shared a photo of herself in a blue bikini, saying: “Guess who popped? This belly did!”

She continued to share her pregnancy journey with friends and fans – from her and Wayde dancing the night away at a wedding, to her discipline when it came to eating healthy and exercising.

When Chesney reached seven months, she took to Instagram saying she wished she could share a story about what her pregnancy had been like up until that moment, but that it felt like it had been easy.

She said: “I believe if you take care of your body, it takes care of you. And this body and baby boy has been kind to me. I haven’t had morning sickness (at all), my vitals are looking good with every check-up. I just wish I had more sonograms to see him move and watch him grow.”

Wayde and Chesney have known each other for eight years and have been married for four.

Chesney wrote to Wayde in an Instagram anniversary post: “I can’t wait to see you as a dad and experience life with our little boy.”

Now, their little Super Van has arrived and the Bloemfontein couple, who now live in the US, can kick off a new chapter.
