Zizi Kodwa apologizes to Black Coffee for not being able to attend his Madison Square Gardens show

Minister Kodwa usually takes up the opportunity to jet out of the country for such occasions when they present themselves.

Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa has sent his apologies to South African DJ and producer, Black Coffee, for not being able to attend his history-making performance at Madison Square Gardens in New York City.

“I am sorry I could not join you on your big day at Madison Square Gardens, but I join millions of South Africans supporting you on your journey. All the best Mashiane, Zukuzela, Masiyana. You continue to represent South Africa well.”

Black Coffee will make history by becoming the first South African DJ or producer to headline Madison Square Gardens.

In April this year, Black Coffee was among the South African Grammy award winners honoured by the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture for achievement on the global stage.

An achievement

“From the streets of Umlazi and Mthatha, to the world’s most famous music arenas, Nkosinathi, you are an inspiration to the young and old. You continue to scale the great heights of world music, taking along with you the best of South African music.

“Black Coffee headlining at Madison Square Gardens is historic and shows the endless possibilities of South African musicians. We commit ourselves to open the global audience to our artists,” Kodwa said.

The Umlazi born and Grammy award-winning music maestro will be supported by South African duo Major League DJz, who have also made a name for themselves beyond South Africa’s borders.

Other artists on the bill include Msaki, Superman singer Bucie and childhood friend Shota.

“I have a song with Shekhinah, but couldn’t include it to my set, I just did a remix for a Snoh Aalegra song and could’ve had her at the show, but the song doesn’t fit the set. I build a set based on just music and then the artists would come through that selection,” said Black Coffee.

Supported

South African DJ Oskido is also in the US to support Black Coffee, together with podcaster Mac G.

The seasoned DJ and record company exec has a good relationship with Black Coffee, having been one of the first people to give the Grammy award producer an opportunity in the industry.

Oskido hosted a party last night in Brooklyn, bringing Amapiano to New York.
