New Avengers movie to be filmed in Joburg

Marvel Studios will film portions of Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron in the Johannesburg city centre and surrounding areas in Gauteng later this month.

The film, directed by Joss Whedon, will shoot action photography sequences throughout the city that will not include principle cast members. The production is scheduled to begin in mid-February and will last for two weeks, according to a statement by Moonlighting Films.

This film project follows on the heels of Marvel Studios’ 2012 record breaking blockbuster The Avengers, which was the fastest film ever to gross $1 billion ( R11 billion) at the box office worldwide, becoming the third highest grossing film of all time.

The Gauteng Film Commission showcased the city to Marvel Studios last year, sharing information about Johannesburg’s physical assets and the benefits of filming in the region which include the possibility of qualifying for the recently revised government film incentive, the statement read.

“We’re thrilled that Marvel Studios is bringing a major motion picture project to Johannesburg, and we’re committed to showing them the very best our region has to offer,” said Gauteng Film Commission CEO Phindile Mbanujwa.

The film will generate many jobs for South African crew members who will be employed by the production.

Additional jobs in the two-week shooting schedule will include over 1 000 man-days for “extras”.
