Wild Type to be tamed by ‘Master’

The race conditions bill Race 7 at Clairwood today modestly as a Graduation Plate for maidens as well as one and two time winners. Yet form students will be showing rapt attention when a small field goes to the gate.

All eyes will be on highly touted Master Of My Fate as he bids for a hat trick. Currently racing off a merit rating of 92, the expectation is that he will earn a much higher classification in the future. By Jet Master out of top racemare Promisefrommyheart, the handsome colt could build on his reputation when he takes on Wild Type, an accomplished horse at Grade 1 level.

Rested since making no show in the Vodacom Durban July, Wild Type had previously showed himself up with the best of his generation by staying on to finish just behind Wylie Hall in the Derby Trial and SA Derby. Even his stout effort when beaten three lengths by Vercingetorix in the Daily News 2000 from a wide draw indicates that Wild Type is no sluggard.

So how good is Master Of My Fate? Strolling in to win a Maiden Plate, then trouncing a moderate bunch in a MR 81 event is one thing but racing at level weights against a classy rival like Wild Type represents a sterner test.

This race will give canny trainer Dennis Drier a good sense of how high he can pitch his charge during the summer and he is selected to prove his worth based on two visually impressive wins.
