The Lo Down: Beauty tips from Hayley Owen

Actress, radio presenter and budding entrepreneur, Johannesburg-based Hayley Owen is a rising star in the South African fashion, beauty, and entertainment industry.

We sat down to chat about some of her beauty tips and tricks, as well as her must-have beauty products.

What is your daily beauty regimen?

Every morning I use Dermalogica’s power firm eye cream and multi-vitamin power serum, followed by Johnson’s daily moisturiser. At night, I’m very strict about removing my makeup and I use a daily exfoliator and then my Alph H rejuvenating cream.

Has your make-up look changed over the years?

Not really. I started copying how my older sister did her make up at school and nothing much has changed since then. I have, however, recently discovered bronzer, which I was previously too afraid to use. I don’t often experiment with make-up trends unless I’m involved in a fashion shoot but lately I have been having fun with lip colour and nail colour.

What are your favourite beauty brands?

I have so many but a few include: Alpha H, Dermalogica, Moroccanoil, M.A.C., Bergasol, Bobby Brown, Lancôme, and Catrice makeup from Dischem.

What’s your must-have beauty product?

Maybelline’s great lash mascara. Apparently one is sold every 1.6 seconds around the world and I can see why. This mascara is incredible.

What’s your number one beauty tip?

Exercise. It makes you look and feel better about yourself, gets your circulation going, helps with vibrant skin, and gives you that healthy glow. Sleep also has a huge impact on how you look and feel so it is important to prioritise rest.

Do you have any unusual beauty tricks?

I have a pumpkin peel every two months. This is far more effective than a facial. A pumpkin peel exfoliates and adds much-needed nutrients to the skin, leaving the face clear and smooth. It’s great for people with sensitive skin and is far less intrusive than a chemical peel.

What celebrity inspires your beauty decisions?

Blake Lively is a beauty and fashion icon for me. She always looks so well put together and so comfortable – she has said before that natural beauty is important to her, making her the perfect L’Oréal spokesperson in my opinion.

What does real beauty mean to you?

Beauty to me is a fine balance between strength and femininity. Overkill on makeup, cleavage or self-tan is a no-no. I’m all about less being more.
