Mr Gay World all out against animal cancer
Urban House hosted newly crowned Mr Gay World, Louw Breytenbach, for the Abba Explosion in support of the South African Animal Cancer Association (SAACA).
With bright rainbow garlands handed to visitors at the door, guests were treated to welcome drinks and delicious Mexican-styled starters before performers Anne-Mari and Zané Jansen van Rensburg sang an array of Abba songs.
The two powerhouse singers soon had a small crowd dancing in the front of the stage, with some of the audience favourites being “Mamma Mia”, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)” and “Dancing Queen”.
The attendees also had the opportunity for a meet-and-greet with Breytenbach, who was crowned Mr Gay World in October this year.
During Breytenbach’s journey to become Mr Gay World, his choice of charity to support was SAACA and continues to support the organisation through fundraising events.
SAACA was founded by Munnik Marais in January this year.
Both Breytenbach and Marais said many domestic animals are treated for, suffer with and die from cancer.
“For many members of the gay community, their dogs and cats are their children,” said Marais. “We are the first organisation in Africa to focus on animal cancer and the fourth in the world,” he said.

Marais said the causes and symptoms of cancer in animals can be very similar in people and therefore research into animal cancer could help with the progress of research and treatment methods for cancer in humans.
“This organisation is for everyone, no matter your age, gender or sexual orientation.” Breytenbach said he chose SAACA for his love of animals, especially since he has a Dalmatian named Loki who has skin problems and can be prone to skin cancer.
The Mr Gay World is also advocating for gay rights at the same time, and said 60% of countries in Africa still criminalise homosexuality.
He said he would be going to Namibia in February 2020 to help the movement to leagilise homosexuality.
