History made at Mbombela Golf Club’s eighth Green Jacket Masters

The winner of the eighth edition of the Green Jacket Masters was Denise West, the first woman to win the competition since it started at Mbombela Golf Club in 2017.

Mbombela Golf Club’s Green Jacket Masters competition yielded not only a great day of golf, but also a day of history as Denise West became the first woman to win the competition.

This year’s Green Jacket Masters was the eighth edition of the tournament, which is fast becoming a prestigious highlight on the golf club’s annual calendar.

It has been held every year without fail since its founding in 2017, even managing to avoid the scourge of cancellations that plagued events during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mbombela Golf Club’s Green Jacket Masters got its name from the US Masters, one of golf’s four majors and one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world, having been held since 1937. The iconic green jacket is awarded to the winner of the US Masters every year, and is one of the most sought-after prizes in all of golfing.

While local amateur golfers might never get the chance to travel to Augusta National Golf Club to try their hand at the real thing, Mbombela Golf Club offers them their own chance at green jacket glory.

The tournament is played in the individual Stableford format and has seen a different winner every year it’s been hosted – Brian Hogg (2017), André Geldenhuys (2018), Leon Wait (2019), Dennis Lambourn (2020), Arthur Douglass (2021), Cas du Toit (2022) and Nash Suriakumar (2023).

This year featured a total of 116 players, double the number that teed off for last year’s edition. Defending champion Suriakumar would have had hopes of becoming the first player to win back-to-back titles. But his fellow golfers had other ideas in 2024. The top three were all within touching distance of one another.

Carnand Myburgh was third overall, finishing on 39 points, with Carl Potgieter in second on 40 points.
However, West was top of the pops after carding 42 points for the day. This made her the first woman to win the Green Jacket Masters, adding her name to the growing list of winners of the prestigious tournament.
