Happy faces abound at seniors’ show

The club puts together a variety show each year in an endeavour to give something back to the elderly.

MBOMBELA – Another unforgettable day was added to the lives of almost 200 local senior citizens when the Lions Club once again pulled off an exceptional Old Folks Show.

The club puts together a variety show each year in an endeavour to give something back to the elderly.

“It started over 30 years ago and was known then as ‘Christmas in June’, but was later moved to October when the Lions Club celebrates World Service Day,” the secretary of the Lions Club, Ms Val Graham, explained.

According to the club this event grows annually and is very popular among older members of the community. “This year we had approximately 190 senior citizens who were all treated to a three-course meal and great performances,” Graham added.

The programme included a variety of performances by singers and dancers from various schools, eisteddfod winners as well as members of the club. The Lions has been active in the Mbombela community and surrounding area for more than 40 years and runs various projects throughout the year, such as eye-care clinics, diabetic screenings, vegetable gardens and many more.

With 1,35 million members across the world, the Lions meets the needs of local communities. “Although geographic areas are different in many ways, we share a core belief – community is what we make it.”
