Local art students wow at Braam van Wijk gallery

Lowvelders are invited to the gallery for the Creative Explorations exhibition, which will last until November 4.

WHITE RIVER – Braam van Wijk’s art gallery in the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre needs no introduction. The work of this esteemed artist’s students, however, was introduced to and celebrated by the public during an exhibition on Saturday. Judging by the public’s adoration of their work, we can expect much more from their talented hands.

Van Wijk celebrates his students. “Each one is an individual in their own right. When people create, their individuality is expressed.”

“The energy that flows when this happens, is celebrated today,” he says. He teaches his students with great care and each one has a special place in his heart. This was clear when he called each exhibiting student forward. After teaching and studying their creative works, he is able to comment on each one’s character and the way it etches itself onto a canvas or drawing board.

“René Eloff, you are a strong woman who loves the African bush, our own Frida Kahlo is Griet from Graskop (or Griet van der Meulen for some) and then there’s Sally Kay – she makes magic with any medium!” he said. “And then Georgie, you’re a small woman with a lot of perseverance and design skill.”

His words of thanks towards Hlobisile Ntila, his right hand at the gallery, was heartfelt.

He described this budding artist as positive, loyal and talented and recounted her reaction to many of his woes, “You will see, Braam, life is good.”

Lowvelders are invited to the gallery for the Creative Explorations exhibition, which will last until November 4.

The exhibition celebrates raw, unique creativity that can only come from the hand of a student whose master supports her fully.

The students flourish under Van Wijk’s guiding hand.

The Lowveld is indeed a sea of talent.
