Santa and buddies spoil old folks

It is said that although the body might weaken with age, the spirit remains forever young and this was definitely true on Wednesday.

Each year the Barberton Care Buddies hold a Christmas party for the elderly, but this time around members invited a distinctive guest and his friendly helper to join in the merriment.

After a morning at the movies, which was held at the Full Gospel Church, it was time for the festivities to start. The tables were decorated in true Christmas colours like green and red, and directly after the main course, the VIP could be heard approaching, ringing in the season with his huge brass bell and the familiar ho ho ho.

Moments later, and to the delight of the senior citizens, Santa Claus (Frans te Water) arrived with one of his female elves (Sue Knight) in tow. It is said that although the body might weaken with age, the spirit remains forever young and this was definitely true on Wednesday.

The elderly greeted the guests from the North Pole with much laughter and a twinkle in their eye while some even had their photos taken while sitting on Santa’s knee. The elf in her leaf-green dress had her work cut out for her handing out presents and spreading the Christmas cheer.

It was obvious once again that these women of the Care Buddies have hearts of gold where our senior citizens are concerned. Not only do they entertain these seniors from time to time with special outings, but throughout the year they provide much-needed assistance running errands, helping out with complications which might arise and mainly being companions to them.

Care Buddies is always in need of more members, so if you feel that you would like to make a difference in the life of a senior citizen in the community, why not give the organisation a call by contacting chairman, Glenda Dallas, on 082-953-7447.
