You can take a stand against cancer

"World Cancer Day 2016 is a chance to reflect on what everyone can do to reduce the impact of this devastating disease, now, and for the future.

MALALANE – The Union of International Cancer Control (UICC), has made a call on people around the world to play their role in reducing their risk of cancer.

The call came last Thursday when the entire world celebrated International Cancer Day.

Every year on February 4 this day unites people from all walks of life with the aim of raising awareness and educating people on the disease, pressing governments and individuals across the planet to take action.

According to the UICC more than a third of all cancers are preventable through lifestyle interventions.

“The UICC also calls on individuals to take responsibility for reducing their own risk. Simple measures like to stop smoking, eating less red and processed meat, exercising regularly and reducing alcohol use can extend a healthy life, and must be seen as the first line of defence against cancer and other associated non-communicable diseases,” Dr Cary Adams, the CEO of UICC, said in a media statement.

“World Cancer Day 2016 is a chance to reflect on what everyone can do to reduce the impact of this devastating disease, now, and for the future.

We wish it to be a springboard for positive change. Take action for yourself, your organisation, your community or even country, as everyone can make a difference and inspire others,” Mr Tezer Kutluk, UICC president, said.

Kutluk appealed to everyone to join in on World Cancer Day 2016 by taking action against the disease – make health and well-being commitments, participate in the official Talking Hands social media activity and get involved in the hundreds of other awareness-raising initiatives that are happening worldwide.
