Is this Barberton’s own Michael Phelps?

According to his swimming coach Gideon du Toit, this 11-year-old, who lives on a farm just outside Barberton, "has what it takes - the will to win".

Local lad Jimmy Munro has caused excitement in Mpumalanga swimming circles by becoming the first swimmer to smash eight Mpumalanga records at the level-2 South African Championships in KwaZulu-Natal recently.

According to his swimming coach Gideon du Toit, this 11-year-old, who lives on a farm just outside Barberton, “has what it takes – the will to win”.

Munro won seven gold medals and a silver at the SA regionals held at Kings Park Pool. This is a first for an 11-year-old.

He obtained gold in the 50-metre free, 100-metre free, 200-metre free and 400-metre free, 100-metre back, 200-metre back, 50-metre fly and 100-metre fly. He took silver in the 200 metres.

Munro also clinched the number-one ranking in South Africa for the 200-metre fly. In this event he is currently ranked in the top 10 internationally.

“He is a little superman,” said Nelspruit Swimming Academy chairman, Madelein Kruger.
